Martin Buber, author of "I-Thou", investigates "The Zone", the place artists hopefull often find themselves. He explains this condition of timelessness that artists feel when completely absorbed in the process as an “unlimitless”, or “a state of grace”. I have often used this same term, “a state of grace”, in describing the process of caring for my grandmother in the weeks before her death. It was a time where every moment was precious and had meaning. Time was too logical to understand because what was happening in the moment was much bigger than any measurement of it. I have never before put the parallels of that beautiful time I shared with my grandmother together with the idea the process of making art. Now, in reflection, it seems that making art can be viewed as just as sacred a time as caring for someone who is passing. It is really a lovely and comforting idea to me.
